How to calculate a contract notice period
The formula is simple: last day to cancel = renewal date minus notice period. What trips people up is business days versus calendar days, ambiguous language, and delivery method requirements.
The formula
Renewal date = start date + term length. Cancellation deadline = renewal date − notice period. Example: signed 13 March 2026, 12-month term, 60 days' notice → renewal 13 March 2027, cancel by 12 January 2027.
Business days vs calendar days
Read the clause carefully. "60 days" usually means calendar days. "60 business days" excludes weekends and holidays — nearly 3 months in practice.
"Before renewal" vs "before end of term"
These usually mean the same thing but not always. If the contract distinguishes, use the earlier date.
Delivery method
If the clause requires notice by registered mail or a specific portal, an email won't count. Read it, follow it, keep the receipt.
